RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer

Paris, October 10th, 2016

Mathieu Demange, musician and audio/midi geek, teamed up with William Lamy, musician and graphic designer, for the development of the RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer, a software emulation of the Yamaha YM2612 soundchip, best known as the vibrant voice of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive videogame console. As fans (not to say children) of 80-90’s computers and consoles, they were keen on reproducing the most advanced and faithful audio rendering of this legendary sound chip, as a solemn tribute to the venerable classic 16-bit machine.

The result is a software synthesizer that runs in Propellerhead Reason (v7.1+), in Rack Extension format. Lots of attention have been put on every detail of the original sound chip’s sonic behaviour. In order to achieve the aimed result, Mathieu has developed an emulation core which is cycle-accurate (digital wise) and sounds identical to the real videogame console thanks to comprehensive hardware tests and circuit analysis of the output stage. As a result, the software synth is capable of reproducing even the most unpredictable sounds that the physical chip is known and loved for, with a remarquable output rendering that sounds alot warmer than usual digital emulations do.

Together with William, they designed the user interface to make the sound-design ergonomics accessible and fast, with a serious brushed-metal looks that translates the high-quality level of the audio processing. The development of this project took almost 3 years to achieve on their spare time, on a “when it’s done” pace, making it evolve until the product reaches the quality goal the two friends set for themselves.

Today, the RYM2612 Iconic FM Synthesizer is available in the Propellerhead Shop for an introductory price of 39,00 €/39.00$ until November 10th.

The RYM2612 is the first commercial product of Mathieu Demange, set as a self-entrepreneur in Paris, France.

Sega and Yamaha brand names are trademark of their respective owners. RYM2612 and Mathieu Demange are in no way affiliated with these companies.
